The space on Water Street, just south of Mason, has been vacant for months and most recently was Fat Freddy's (I think that was the name), before that Downtown's only Arby's. Soon, though -- according to a sign on the window -- it will be Cornby's.

Frankly, that's all I know. I've attempted several phone calls, all going straight to a fax and walked by many times, too (never have I seen anyone working there).

So, I'm here to tell you that Corby's is coming. My guess is they'll sell sandwiches, maybe even corned beef. A partial menu is posted on the inner window inside parking structure and at the space. A quick read did confirm suspicions that it's a sandwich / deli kind of place. But, that's all I know. Stay tuned or talk back should you know more.

There's a sign on the door (11/11/2009) indicating that Cornby's is closed and is not likely to re-open.

Cornby's is open.....finally. But it was worth the wait! Corned Beef rivals Jakes (known to all CB lovers)....burgers are a little better than Kopps....Custard (in my mind) is pretty good....then again the only real custard I know of in the biz district. Paninis excellent...made on flat bread. Salad bar a little pricey but a good variety.

I'm a new transplant to downtown, and I'm insane for Reuben's. Conrby's fell a bit short of my expectations. It was only barely grilled, the cheese inside wasn't at all 'melty' (it's a technical term), and the corned beef was, at best, luke warm. I got fries (no included) and they were a bit floppy for my taste. I've heard their panini's are good, and a salad bar this close to work (about 30 feet North of my building) will be hard to pass up. It has to be better than that Reuben (Brooklyn Bob's is a nice alternative, although I've only heard RAVES about Mo's)

Its open now. I didnt try it, but was in there w/ a friend. Looks like a nice little place. Burgers, sanwiches, gyros, dogs, soup, salad bar. Custard. Everything is $3-7. The salad bar looked really good. Nice addition to downtown. Good luck to them... hope they make it.
