Every Sunday night, the bar Circa hosts a poetry/music night. From what I've heard, the poets are accessible and good. This Sunday, for example, John Tyson reads at 8 p.m. and his son Noah's band, Highlonesome, performs. The show starts at 8 p.m.
I had the pleasure of ducking into Circa last weekend and forgot how much I like that place. It's cozy and warm with great lighting. Plus, it's decked out in a tasteful way for the holidays. The house next door, however, is less tasteful, but a definite sight to see, providing a little taste of the South Side's Candy Cane Lane right here on the East Side.
Circa is one of Milwaukee's most under-the-radar hangout spots, which, for the most part, is a good thing. I can imagine it would be the ideal locale to take in a little spoken word while sipping a pint ... or two.
