What was once Indian is now Italian on Milwaukee's Old World Third Street. Transforming the space formerly occupied by Jewel of India, Capone's Grotto and Little Italy Olive Oil Company bring the food and the atmosphere of the old country with new restaurant and bar renovations.
Occupying two storefronts, Capone's Grotto will be one part family-style restaurant and one part late-night bar. The restaurant will serve everything Italian, from pizza and lasagna to sandwiches and spaghetti.
The bar / restaurant planned to open mid-September but delays pushed the launch back to early October.
For those who loved Jewel of India, not to worry. The restaurant relocated to 5114 S. 108th St. and operates under the new name Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant.

It's interesting to note that the bad reviews here are from people who have never even been inside this restaurant. In fact, their biggest complaint is that they don't like the name. Are you being serious!? The allure of Capone's Grotto is its gangster theme. The idea behind the restaurant is to immerse diners in an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1920's prohibition era -- Al Capone being a major bootlegger during this period. The restaurant has casual Italian dining with an adjacent bar/lounge done up "Rat Pack" style. There is also a Dean Martin impersonator who will be performing in the lounge starting in January of '09. The bar even serves the same bottled beer that Al Capone boolegged from Canada! For a fun themed experience, try Capone's Grotto. The owners did a great job with this place.

For the longest time I have been traveling a little distance to Chicago to experience the greatness and unique ambiance of well designed themed restaurants. My ears perked when a colleague mentioned to me that an Al Capone and Rat Pack themed restaurant was opening in the middle of downtown Milwaukee. Upon entering the restaurant area of the business, named "Little Italy Olive Oil Company", the first thing that catches your eye is a true-to-life version of Al Capone sitting on a beautiful antiqued chair with red velvet seat, positioned in the front window. The walls are decorated with dozens of photographs of goons from the 20's, including Al Capone. The staff is extraordinarily friendly, with our waitress named "Isabella" being right on point with all of our ordering requests. The menu is full of famous italian recipes, with the most appetizing being the thin crust pizza. The lasagna was also flavorful, as well as the spaghetti. Upon completion of dinner, a trip over into the bar side of the business, "Capone's Grotto", was very relaxing. The walls are decorated with the members of the infamous "Rat Pack", and music of variety and the great Frank Sinatra plays in the background. The excellent service continues into the bar area, and the imagery of the design elements keeps you searching for more; exposed brick mixed with neutral colored walls, dark stained crown molding and 20's/30's designed bar...and of course, don't miss the bullet holes in the walls, probably from a Tommy Gun! In this type of restaurant/bar, you can enjoy the delicious food, delightful service, and relaxing environment any day of the week until 2am. When looking for a break and a bite to eat away from the jam-packed, college student occupied bars of downtown Milwaukee, stop into Capone's Grotto and Little Italy Olive Oil Company to meet all of your needs! I had a wonderful experience at the only Al Capone themed restaurant/bar in downtown Milwaukee.

Old world Third Street already has a pretty good Italian place in Tutto, which is a bit more classy and original. Capones is not a good name anyway. Way overdone. Named after the same gangster who ordered the murders of HUNDREDS of men and then died of syphilis? What's next? A German place called Hitler's Haven?? Change the name and maybe I'll check it out!

what a lame name. how about a burger place called Dahmer's Den? i'd advise the owner to use his noodle to come up with a new name rather than playing on the same old tired stereotypes.
