When Erbert & Gerbert's, the Eau Claire-based sub chain, closed its Downtown Milwaukee location at 612 N. Water St. in early 2008 it was replaced by Brooklyn Bob's Sub Shop.
Today, a message on the business' answering machine says, "How are you doing? Brooklyn Bob's is no longer in business but we'd like to thank all of our customers for their support over these four years."
Brooklyn Bob's first opened at 839 W. National Ave., in April 2005. The shop, which featured Boar's Head meats, was owned by Bob Zaptin and his wife Jeannie. An e-mail to Zaptin seeking comment was not returned.

Good subs, but too expensive. Not worth the drive from Tosa.

If a store closes that only like ten people had heard of, was it ever really open?

I had tried one of their subs and it was great. But sadly, as I mentioned when the news of them opening was first posted, there's way too many sandwich shops in that part of the downtown area.

Damn. This sucks. Best subs in town. The place was never busy and in a bad spot. I work downtown and nobody knew about it when I would tell them how awesome it was. Good luck, Bob! Hopefully you'll reopen elsewhere. I think a place like this would rock in Brookfield, near the business parks.

Very sad news. This was one of the only "true" sub shops in all of Milwaukee.
