Milwaukee's best veggie burger, 2008: Beans & Barley
The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
For as long as we've been tailgating before Brewers games and grabbing late-night eats at George Webb, Milwaukee has been a hamburger kind of town. While those culinary traditions won't be dissipating any time soon, the local burger landscape has more recently opened its parameters to let its step-cousin, the veggie burger, in on the fun.
One of the best things about veggie burgers is that no restaurant does them the same way. Some places, like Café Centraal and Water Buffalo, opt for the black bean cake with interesting condiment combinations. Others, like Hooligan's go the simple route, offering vegetarians the standard Gardenburger with their choice of toppings.
But, when pitted against each other, OnMilwaukee.com readers voted Beans and Barley the winner, though it's not clear whether it was thanks to its tofu burger, made by Simple Soyman, or its vegetarian walnut burger, a nut and cheese patty.
Either way, Milwaukee agrees that Beans does it best.

P.S. If you are interested now would be the time to ask Bella's to create a vegan version of the veggie burger. Act now to hold the cheese. Thanks.

Above I said how wonderful Bella's Fat Cat veggie burger was. Unfortunately the key word being "was". The last time I stopped in it was terrible, definitely something changed. I recently called Bella's and I was told that the company that use to supply the delicious veggie patty had gone out of business. I was told that they are working on a new made from scratch version, which they hope will be equal to if not better than the original. So in a couple of weeks I will stop down and try out the new taste sensation. Hope others can stop by and give their opinion on the new veggie burger.

Agreed Bella's veggieburger is delicious. Now I will have to try Comets and J.Hawks. With out a doubt Beans and Barley is my favorite place to eat. Great variety of vegan options and great staff. Give the TLT a try, it is outstanding.

Of all places, Bella's makes one of the best veggie burgers in town. Get it with everything you might normally get on a real burger, and you're in for a genuine treat.
