The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Eat & Drink, 2007. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
The steakhouse boom hit the American restaurant industry in the 1990s. Over the past decade in Milwaukee, it often seemed as though a trendy new steak place opened almost every month.
Through it all, the Five O'Clock Steakhouse has remained a constant.
The venerable restaurant, located at 2416 W. State St., has been serving huge hunks of perfectly seared, lightly crusted and flavorful meat for more than four decades. Neither the ambience nor the décor -- straight out of the '60s -- has changed much.
Customer loyalty hasn't wavered, either.
In a field crowded with worthy competitors, OnMilwaukee.com readers once again voted the Five O'Clock Steakhouse as the favorite place for steak.
Never mind that the neighborhood has seen better days, or that the one-pound baked potatoes are now listed on the a la carte menu rather than included.
The Five O'Clock keeps people coming back because the New York Strip and filet mignon are comparable to the best steakhouses in the country. Saveur magazine recently called the restaurant one of its five favorite steakhouses in the country.

when i think of top-quality beef, i do not picture it arriving on a rolling tin cart. secondly, i do not picture it arriving in a pool of some house marinade. does not the quality of the cut itself want to be showcased? thirdly, top steakhouse means more than just the beef itself. what about decor, SERVICE, and wine list. i can not vote for this place as tops.

I agree. I have tried many steakhouses around Milwaukee and around the country. The Five O'Clock Steakhouse is my #1. Some people don't like the "old Wisconsin" atmosphere or think the quality of service is not to a high standard. But if you are after the best steak, this is the place to go.

Note to oenochick....don't know where you moved from, but the Five O'Clock Steakhouse IS Milwaukee meat at its best and the adjoining list does include many of the very best steakhouses verified by my many years of dining and enjoying life in my hometown. No smoke? Venture west to Brookfield...abundant non-smoking steakhouse "chains" to satisfy you....more time on your hands? Venture south to Chicago and you will find no smoking but most of the same great food that Milwaukee offers with higher prices in their popular well-established steakhouses. BTW, do you really like steak? Last time I was at Five O'Clock seated at the bar, a former Packer favorite, Santana Dotson, came in and sat next to me while waiting for a table. It was a funny, memorable experience because his massive frame nearly knocked me off my stool and onto the next one....he also raved about the steak at this place and didn't seem to mind the billowing smoke.

Kudos to OMC, I've visited every steakhouse in the area, and try to get to every new chain as well before management has a chance to tweak things. That being said, there are only two places in town that have the hallmark of not only having fantastic cuts of meat, but the consistancy in service and product. The 5 O'Clock Club is one of said Restaurants (Carnevor being the other). Where Carnevor loses ground to the 5 O'Clock Club is in that Ethereal epicurious, Old School style. So, if you want your Steakhouse that is flashy, part of the scene, you're better served elsewhere, and maybe have it under a different category... but last I checked, the name of this award was Best Steakhouse - and The 5 O'Clock Club is a fantastic choice
