Milwaukee's best ribs, 2010: Speed Queen

The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2010. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.

Last year it was Saz's over Speed Queen by 13 votes. This year the margin of victory was doubled but the crown went to Speed Queen for the best ribs in Milwaukee.

Speed Queen is a more than half-century-old Milwaukee landmark, focusing on carry-out barbecue with affordable prices and a drive-through window that makes it easy to pick up its signature ribs, rib tips and other specialties.

Earlier this year, the restaurant at 1130 W. Walnut St. lost its matriarch and co-founder, Betty Gillespie, who died from colon cancer at the age of 73.

But the barbecue landmark has survived her passing, and continues to serve what OnMilwaukee.com readers have picked as the best ribs in town.

OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Fire Pit Sports Bar & Grill

Runners-up:
2. Saz's
3. Jerry's Old Town
4. Pitch's
5. Five O'Clock Club
tie. Jackson Grill
7. Silver Spur
8. Stubby's
9. Fire Pit Sports Bar & Grill
10. Harry's
11. Bigg's Roadhouse
12. Conejito's
13. Karma
tie. Buckley's Kiskeam Inn
15. Nardo's Passport Inn

Talkbacks

Until I read the talkback, I didn't know that Ashley's BBQ existed! We ordered some ribs and shoulder from them on Saturday and agree that is the best in the City. Delivery to our condo was just $3 and was delivered by Ashley himself. He asked how we heard of them and we mentioned it was from the talkback on Milwaukee's best ribs from onmilwaukee.com. Thanks to the others for the heads up!

Agreed wholeheartedly on the exclusion of Ashley's being a downright embarrasement. Best BBQ in the city, bar-none.

I know it is OnMilwaukee, but thoughts on Pat's Ribs in Waukesha? I thought it was good, reasonably priced and the staff was very friendly. I agree, Speed Queen tends to be a bit overrated. Also, when are you going to post the numbers of votes next to each of the restaurants. You said Saz's won last year by 13, so you have the numbers. Post 'em!

Meh. The ribs at Speed Queen are ok but you'd do much better if you ordered the shoulder & outside dinner which is really the best thing on the menu. The exclusion of Ashley's on Center makes this list a complete embrassment.
