Milwaukee's best deli, 2010: Glorioso Bros. Italian Foods
The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2010. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
Opened in 1946, brothers Joe, Eddie and Ted Glorioso have managed to work side by side for over 60 years to run the most authentic and fully stocked Italian deli and grocery in town. And OnMilwaukee.com readers have voted Glorioso's Milwaukee's best deli.
For years, they've sought to import only the finest in traditional Italian cheeses, meats, olive oils and balsamic vinegars to give immigrants and locals a chance to re-create familial dishes from the "mother country."
While some stock up on ingredients for home cooking, it's the deli's prepared sandwiches that lure droves of hungry, drooling customers. Combinations like the Human Torch, Veggie Paesnao's and Milwaukee Muffalatta combine piles of fresh Italian meats, cheeses and combinations of peppers, olives and artichokes.
For those looking for something a bit more basic, get there early on Sunday for traditional hot ham and rolls.
OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Benji's
6. G. Groppi
7. Larry's Brown Deer Market
8. Waterfront Deli
10. West Allis Cheese and Sausage
12. National Bakery and Deli
Best Italian beef! Get there early on Saturdays for the "fresh out-of-the-oven" artichoke hearts breaded ravioli and fresh mozzy balls.
Good choice. Italian sausage sandwich with hot peppers. Glorioso's kicks arse!
I have to agree that Benji's is good but not great. We travel to New York quite often and Benji's isn't at the New York level for great food. Gloriosos on the other hand has the Human Torch and the family atmosphere that makes it special so I agree with the readers on this one not the editors.
