Milwaukee's best bar food, 2010: Hooligan's

The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2010. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.

Once again, Milwaukeeans picked Hooligan's as their favorite spot to thrown down bar food. With a consistent and diverse menu that offers everything from wraps to burgers to a fish fry, it's a solid choice.

Hooligan's takes bar fare to the next level, which is one of the reasons why it's so popular with Milwaukkeans. The East Side staple offers hardy burgers of all varieties -- including ostrich and veggie -- but also serves up catfish, shrimp, cod, perch, walleye, about 10 different chicken sandwiches, BLTs, a New Orleans muffuletta and even a few healthier items like wraps and salads.

Hooligan's serves food daily until 10 p.m. Plus, with 10 televisions and more than 30 micro and import draft beers to chose from, Hooligan's is a locally acclaimed destination spot to watch the game or hang out with friends.

The word "bar food" means a bar that serves food. It does not mean a eatery that serves booze. Most of these places should not even qualify. Personally, Rounding Third on Bluemound has the best bar food if you're talking authentic bar food. Their chicken wings are unsurpassed and everything else on the menu is just about as good. They have half price appetizers on Sundays during a comedy open mic. Also, Fritz's Pub on Oklahoma is amazing. Fritz's pork shiskabob is amazing. These are real bars that serve food. If you serve ostrich you're not a bar.

Slim's or McBob's should've been higher. Too bad 5th Ward Pub's kitchen closed.... that was a hidden gem that I guess remained too hidden.

Made an account to just comment on this article. Are you kidding me Milwaukee? Went here for the 1st time last Friday & the food was horrible. The place was packed & it's a small bar/restaurant to begin with. Not the greatest service. I ordered the perch fish fry & it was disgusting. The fish was salty, makes me question freshness. My potato pancake was unappetizing as well & it came with no maple syrup. I tried using the lemon & tarter sauce to help my fish...it didn't. Used the applesauce to help the pancake..same outcome. The only things on my plate I had nothing to complain about was the bread & coleslaw. My friends, who ordered other things off the menu, said their dinners were pretty good. Except their fries were cold. So BEST bar food? Pretty sad Milwaukee..pretty sad.

I like the term Pub Grub myself, there's just something unappetizing about "Barf ood".
