Milwaukee's best Mexican, 2010: Botanas
The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2010. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
The growth of Milwaukee's Mexcian population has had a very positive effect on the city's dining scene over the year, with more and more restaurants popping up to offer customers south of the border specialties.
But when it came to picking a favorite, Milwaukeeans didn't hesitate to name Botanas, 816 S. 5th St., as being a cut above the rest.
In addition to traditional cuisine, Botanas also has an impressive seafood menu and family-friendly options.
The OnMilwaukee.com editorial staff picked Riviera Maya as its favorite of the year.
OnMilwaukee.com editors' choice: Riviera Maya
3. La Fuente
5. Rivera Maya
7. Cafe Corazon
8. Jalapeno Loco
9. La Perla
12. La Estacion

Habenero's on Brown Deer not on list? Great guacamole made table-side and entrees. Jose's Blue Sombrero on Blue Mound and Barker is great Guacamole too and decent entrees.
Congrats to Jaime and his hard working staff! Well deserved! Keep up the good work!
We went to Cempazuchi this month. The margarita was one of the best I have had in Milwaukee. My fish tacos were delicious. Some of the other plates were skimpy. The service was not good. We were a large group with reservations. As we came in, the host said, "Your chips are on the table. We're bringing out the salsas right away." Ten minutes later, they still weren't on the table. We waved to try to get the eye of several staff, but they'd look away. This was not a busy evening. Two servers were at the host station and turned their backs to us to finish their conversation. Finally the server came and we asked for salsas. He said to one of the server assistants (to whom we had been waving), "Please get them salsa." "Oh, you want salsa?" he asks us airily. At the end of the meal, our plates were cleared away, we were not going to have desert, and we were finishing our drinks. The waiter started clearing off the chips, taking a basket just as one of us was taking out a chip. "Oh, are you still eating those?" Even after that, it seemed he was rushing us. We were waiting for the bill, it was not a busy night, and it was not late. Food was still being served to other tables. We'll probably try some of the others on this list before going back to Cempazuchi. The food was good, but not to the point where we want to test the service again. I love the moles at Riviera Maya and a shrimp dish with a chipotle sauce at Jalapeo Loco.
If you want cheap, decently made tex-mex food Botanas is a great choice. If you want authentically and well-made mexican, Cempazuchi and Riviera Maya are a cut above the rest. To the moron who said Cempazuchi is overpriced, there's a difference between quality and cost. Jalisco's may taste great eaten drunk at 3am but i'll certainly pay for quality sober any time. Cempazuchi also has the best margaritas in milwaukee in the sense that they are done properly and not a sugary/cheap booze slurry that Botanas and La Fuente pump out.
They do have the best food and margaritas, but I agree with a previous poster. Their service has really gone down from when I first started going there.
