The fries that no MIlwaukeean can resist... |

The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
Milwaukee's Best Fries is a new category this year for OnMilwaukee.com's annual "Best Of" survey. Based on the results, it looks like our readers were just as passionate about this potato product as we were.
Hundreds of you chimed in with votes, deciding by a large margin that Saz's, 5539 W. State St., fries up the best frite in town with its famous sour cream and chive offering. It's little surprise that Saz's takes the prize, as any Milwaukeean knows a trip to Summerfest isn't complete without an order, or, at the very least, the sampler platter.
Coated in a rich sour cream and chive batter and fried to potato perfection, this local legend is unlike any other. Paired with Parmesan ranch dressing (ketchup? Please...), it's the kind of side order that many have made a meal.
Despite the trends that make, super thin, upscale pommes frites the finger food du jour, Milwaukee doesn't like to mess much with tradition. Here are some of your other favorites.

Saz's is a solid choice. Is it my No. 1? Probably not, but the place does make a good batch of fries. Some of the others on the list, though, now that's a different story. I mean, how Bella's made the the Top 10 ranking is beyond me. Bella's makes a fine burger, but its fries are definitely not memorable. The same with Kopp's. Great burger, but the fries aren't anything special. And the Palomino, though I love the place, makes a boring batch, as well. Also, I know that Cafe Hollander brags about its fries, but the fry itself is not much better than a George Webb's. The only thing it has going for it is that it offers different dipping sauces. A good French Fry should be able to be eaten by itself -- ketchup or other sauces should make them that much better. Since most on the list are from the Eastside, here are some places that make a mean order of fries, also in that Eastside vacinity. - Red Dot (called Poutines -- made with gravy and cheese curds) - Pizza Shuttle (fresh, meaty, and moist) - Comet Cafe (should be moved up a notch) - Ma Fisher's - Wendy's (I know, sounds cheesy, but it makes tasty fries)

Saz's is overrated. A surprise: ComedySportz has great fries. And their burgers a pretty good, too!

My favorite fries of all time are from the now-closed Q. Skin-on, very salty, and delicious. When is Milwaukee going to get another great barbecue place?
