The votes are in, and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best Dining 2008. The results of this readers' poll, including an editors' pick, are available in this series of articles that run all October long during Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com.
October is Dining Month on OnMilwaukee.com. All month, we're stuffed with restaurant reviews, special features, chef profiles and unique articles on everything food. Bon appetit!
Peter Sciortino's Bakery, a Brady Street institution for decades, has little competition, according to OnMilwaukee.com readers, who again -- for the fourth year in a row -- voted it Milwaukee's best bakery.
With the exception of only Simma's, no other bakery came even remotely close to competition among the runners up. In addition to the vote-getters below, five percent of readers voted for a number of other bakeries in the "other" category, including Amaranth, Alterra and City Market.
The smell of fresh bread wafts out of Sciortino's Bakery every morning, reminding Milwaukee of Brady Street's Italian community. But what really tempts at Sciortino's are the cannoli and sumptuous Italian cookies, tiramisu, cakes and other pastry.
Everything is made from scratch daily, resulting in incredibly fresh baked good. Even typing about it is making us hungry ...

Yes, any wizened tailgater knows you get your sausages at Gloriosos and your sausage roll at Sciortinos.

Milwaukee has no shortage of great Italian bakeries, none of whom I'd rank higher than the other. Sciortinos, Scordato's, Nino's, Roma, Canfora with Scardina's my personal favorite as they sometimes still give out a bakers dozen. We also have an outstanding bakery for cookies that no one mentioned, the Columbian bakery, Mekato's. The Rice Palace had a Vietnamese bakery inside that was closed on my last visit (temporarily I was told) that had those French-style baguettes so essential for a Bahn Mi sandwich.

Sciortino's is the best! I remember going past there to and from school as a kid and grabbing a loaf and splitting it with my friends as we walked. Or going on Saturday with my grandfather to pick up Grandma's required 6 cannolis for brunch.
