There's a new burger in town, Milwaukee. Correction, there are several new burgers in town including three veggie varieties that are sure to please. Maureen Post first told you about AJ Bombers, 1247 N. Water St., but I had the chance to eat there this week.
Perched at the corner of Water and Knapp Streets, it's fun, smoke free, full of surprises and instantly in the race for "best burger in Milwaukee." Seriously.
That's right. The burger with the buzz is the The Bomber Burger. A quarter-pound fresh beef patty, cooked medium (or to your liking) smashed with a crispy fried portabella mushroom. Add a light, tasty and toasted bun and you have a great burger that, right out of the gates, runs with some of the best in town. The cost -- $7.50.
I know, I know Water Street for food? Much less this location? You're not buying it if you're not at Eagan's, Water Street Brewery, Q-Doba or Fat Abbey. Believe it, though. Let's just say that the ghosts and smells that haunted The Corner and Water's End (the places that inhabited this space just months ago) are long gone and replaced with the sleek style of Flux Design and the creations of Chef Frank Ortlieb.
It's not just the Bomber Burger either. I loved their basic burger just as much. $4 gets you this basic burger -- a single AJ burger with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and bomber sauce. Add $2 for a side of handmade fries or sweet potato chips and save $4 for a homemade ice cream sandwich cookie. Prices are right, indeed.
Not a beef person? Check out AJ Bombers three different veggie burgers or just go for its way cool peanut delivery system. The bartenders dump your peanuts into steel bombs that fly along tracks eventually hitting a target above your table. Very cool, fun and one of those things that should create a lot of talk. And, yes, you can throw your shells onto the floor.
AJ Bombers is open daily at 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner.

Love the peanut missiles, infinitely entertaining. Bartenders were very friendly and the food was pretty good. And an A++++ for NO SMOKING! Great new place!

Really didnt want to go down to Water St, but a friend twisted my arm. Glad I did! This burger was great, especially the bun. Peanut delivery might be my favorite thing there, just be sure to cover your drink if you get some sent to your table! Will definetly be back, especially since i dont really have to even go on Water St to get into the place.
