What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published April 24, 2007 at 5:32 a.m.

My wife and I enjoyed a beautiful Sunday afternoon in our neighborhood this past weekend. We perched on the Riverwalk landing directly across from Rock Bottom Brewery at the end of Mason Street just sitting, talking and reading.

Suddenly a couple came toward us, the woman running ahead of her boyfriend, we presumed. She had a "Boston" T-shirt on, and shouted "wow, this is just like a little Venice." We smiled, proud of our Milwaukeeism, if you will, and asked her how she was doing. She said, "great and I love this city! It's really cool. We're from Boston (pointing to her T-shirt) and need a good Chinese restaurant to hit." She mentioned that they had just walked from the "historic district" (Third/Fifth Ward) and wanted to explore another area. We steered her to Brady Street (they had a car at the hotel) and told her to hit Emperor of China (the birthplace of OnMilwaukee.com, by the way). She thanked us and they went on their way.

It was a nice reminder of how great our Downtown is. Two first-time visitors were "amazed" at Milwaukee and I must say that it made us proud. To this friendly Boston couple we say thank you and "On Milwaukee!"

I've eaten Chinese food in Venice and Emperor is better. However, I'd argue that Milwaukee, with twice the population, isn't exactly a "little Venice" just because it has a river with development. Maybe a little San Antonio or something like that is more accurate. Venice, admittedly, has an area nearly twice the City of Milwaukee's, but most of that is water. Even on the Riverwalk, which really is great, Milwaukee doesn't feel anything like Venice. That's not to say it's better or worse, it's just different. Silly Bostonians.

Are you kidding me? Emperor of China is outstanding - on par with anything I've had in Chinatowns from San Francisco to Singapore, with reasonable prices, reliable quality and delicious offerings. Why shouldn't we recommend it to out-of-towners?

It's also a good reminder of how there are no good Chinese restaurants in Milwaukee. Don't get me wrong - I've downed buckets o' noodles from Empelah Chinah myself, but it's embarrassing to think that it is the best one can come up with as a suggestion to visitors. A few have tried to create high quality Chinese eateries in the downtown area, but they always seem to fall flat.
