The United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) announced today that Christine Harris has been named president of the non-profit organization that provides primary operating support to 22 member groups. Harris replaces Julie Tolan, who was named vice president of university advancement at Marquette University in September.

Harris served as executive director of the Milwaukee Ballet from 1997 through its 2001-'02 season.

"The performing arts are a phenomenal asset to the community and Christine's success as a fundraiser, strategic planner and longstanding advocate for the arts made her the ideal candidate to lead UPAF to even greater success in the future," said Brenda Skelton, chairperson of the board for UPAF and director of the Northwestern Mutual Foundation. "Based on her significant involvement with UPAF at the Milwaukee Ballet, her knowledge of the organization and ability to continue to strengthen relations with the member groups will be critical to ensure the vitality of the performing arts community."

OnMilwaukee.com recently entered into a promotional and marketing agreement with UPAF and is currently developing a new Web site for the group's annual Miller Lite Ride for the Arts.

Since 1967, UPAF has generated more than $150 million to provide support for its performing arts member groups in southeastern Wisconsin. Funds raised during the 2003 effort will help to support the 22 UPAF member groups: Florentine Opera Company; Milwaukee Ballet; Milwaukee Repertory Theater; Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra; Skylight Opera Theatre; Bel Canto Chorus; First Stage Children's Theater; Ko-Thi Dance Company; Chamber Theatre; Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra; Next Act Theatre; Present Music; Bialystock & Bloom Company; Boulevard Ensemble Studio Theatre; City Ballet Theatre; Danceworks; Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra; Milwaukee Dance Theatre; Milwaukee Public Theatre; Renaissance Theaterworks; Theatre X; and Wild Space Dance Company.

UPAF has also awarded more than $260,000 to 95 non-member grant recipients.
