Here's some good news if you're young and looking for a summer job.
The Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIB), in cooperation with Mayor Tom Barrett, just announced the "Earn and Learn Program" to provide 3,000 jobs for Milwaukee's youth.
For eight weeks, beginning June 22, youth between the ages of 14 and 24 can participate in this city-wide program to get exposure to various work environments while earning hands-on job experience. Youth have the opportunity to work at one of 90 participating non-profit, private and public sector employers, earning both experience and a paycheck.
The application deadline for the "Earn and Learn Program" is May 15. Applications may be picked up at MAWIB's office or printed online but must be returned to the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board office at 2342 N. 27 St.

What this article didn't touch upon is that there are programs in place, after the summer is over, during the school year to build upon their career, teaching them to write a resume, and help them figure out what they want to do in life. Its not just a summer job.

Yes, it's a wonderful "idea" but why are you giving kudos to Barrett for this now? Hasn't this been an ongoing problem for decades? Barrett has been in office since 2004 and NOW he's just getting around to this in 2009? Boy, some Milwaukeeans are so easily duped by politicians looking to keep their jobs instead of actually taking a stand and making real change. I guarantee that nearly 100% of Milwaukeeans will not look back on this program after the summer to see if it actually worked or if any of these kids stick with the jobs/internships they start. Like many programs started by democrats (Barrett), they're a great "idea" with wonderful "intentions" but rarely are they ever revisited by anyone (especially the media) to see if they actually did any good.

This program is great for intercity youth, espeically getting on the fast track to learning about a new career that they probally never thought of before. Many of these are nice internships, that allow employers who normally wouldn't hire these types of kids, learn something new from them as well. Its a wonderful idea to keep kids off the street in the summer, where they might be joining gangs, and doing things that are unproductive to society. Kudos to Barlett for this program.

Typical liberal goobleygook. I am so tired of the most ineffectual big-city mayor in the country (Tom Barrett) using the old "we need to create jobs for the youth" or "the answer to the inner city's problems is more jobs". Let me clue you liberal bozos in on something: there are jobs out there for teens and it doesn't take some ridiculous government program to facilitate this process. In fact, I have the solution for these teens: go on the internet, look at the classified ads, or, as my mother said, "go pound the pavement". Yes, jobs for teens usually suck, (who really likes flipping burgers?), but for the love of god do we now need Barrett and Doyle and the use of government programs to encourage today's lazy teens to work? Perfect example of Obama "nanny state" politics which is great for those to lazy or stupid to find a job on their own.
