Sunday Sound-off: Should pot be legalized?
Peter Tosh says, "Legalize it!" But what are your thoughts?

Today is April 20, which is known to potheads around the country as "4/20," a counterculture "holiday" that promotes the consumption of cannabis. In honor of this ridiculous day, we harvest your thoughts on the legalization of marijuana. Do you think this is a good idea? A bad idea? Or are you simply too stoned to respond?

Sound-off now, Milwaukee, and let us know your thoughts on legalizing pot.

Legalize it! It doesn't make sense that alcohol is legal, but pot is not. Getting drunk is a lot more altering then getting stoned, and yet booze consumption is not only legal, it's celebrated in our culture. No one has ever died from smoking pot and it doesn't generate violence like other drugs. The legalization of marijuana would be good for farmers, cancer / AIDS patients and recreational users who do not deserve to go to jail.

Keep it illegal. Marijuana is a drug, and it's a gateway to harsher indulgences. It's a bad idea to legalize pot because it would be easier for teenagers to get a hold of it, which could lead them to make terrible life decisions. Plus, pot makes you unmotivated, disorganized, slow and stupid.

I honestly think that the reason most teens start it is because its illegal but on the other side if it were legal people would use it like cigarettes and build up a tollerence to it. Right now thats how poor people make extra income instead of tabacco companies making millions and poisoning it. I think its better being illegal.

I got into a debate on legalization with an old high school friend. I was totally for legalization, he was against it. He started bringing up names of classmates who we knew smoked pot and died in car wrecks. I had to counter him every time, "He was drinking.", "Those 4 girls were at a kegger and had a 12 pack in the car.", "He was also drinking." If they all had just smoked, they probably would've been driving about 30mph on the right side of the road. I know one guy that has been smoking since college and has avoided the law and any health issues. He's worked steady for 20 years and doing fine. It's definitely time to revisit the legalities and the positives of growing and taxing weed and put to bed the nonsense of "reefer madness".

jway-- I agree, people shouldn't use the term "pothead" to refer to pot-users. We should call them cheechers, stoners and hippy-granola-faces. Those terms are way more fun. "Pothead" lacks the creativity and industry that pot-users exhibit. I mean c'mon!! Haven't you ever seen someone pull a MacGuyver and make a bong out of a shampoo bottle, chewing gum and Cheetos??

i think it should be legalized and goverment regulated and taxed no different than cigarettes and alcohol are for example you could go to the gas station get a 5 or 10 pack of joints and of course having to be 21 years old to purchase, the money generated from the taxes on that would be enormous and help out jobs and farmers think about it is there a marijuana annonymous and has anyone in the history of makind ever died from smoking marijuana and the jails would be less crowded also i mean gimme a break it is grown naturally and not maufactured like coke meth and crack

The word "pothead" is somewhat derogatory, it's a term used by certain members of our society to cast scorn on those who use marijuana and those who support its legalization, regardless of whether they use it or not. How can you ask those who support legalization to respond to your question if you insult them in the first sentence of your article? You then go on to call 4/20 a "ridiculous day" before you ask for your readers to contribute, and if they don't you classify them as "too stoned to respond". Well, they shouldn't respond! What they should do is contact OnMilwaukee.com and call for your dismissal. It is entirely inappropriate to ridicule and insult certain members of our society and dress it up as a request for thoughts on legalization. Have a good day.
