Is Radio Milwaukee dialed in enough? |

Welcome to the new and improved OnMilwaukee.com Sunday Sound-off, now featuring a question, two different perspectives -- then opening up the topic to our readers' responses. Please use the Talkback feature below to contribute your thoughts on the issue.
It's been a few months since 88Nine (88.9) Radio Milwaukee jumped the airwaves -- it launched on February 23, 2007. The non-commercial station was long-awaited by many Milwaukee music fans who had long since given up on the radio, other then maybe NPR or WMSE.
The goal of 88.9 is to play eclectic, good music with intelligent DJs who understand the tastes of Milwaukee's music-minded folks and aren't shackled to a set list. Has the station lived up to its intention?
Now that you've had time to listen, what do you think about this station? Did they deliver? Were they able to maintain what they originally dished out? In short, is it a 'yay' or a 'nay' for 88.9?
Yay. I love this station. They play a lot of interesting music that's all over the board and it feels very spontaneous. I think the DJs are much less annoying then most radio personalities, and their comments are usually pretty smart. This station gives me faith in the radio again.
Nay. Radio Milwaukee started out spontaneous, but now it sounds like they have a set list. Plus, they promised to play a lot of local music, but it seems like that too has diminished over the past month or so. I started out very excited about Radio Milwaukee, but it's just not producing what it promised.

I am a YES! I happen to think that Milwaukee can support WMSE and WUWM and WYMS. I have my favorite DJs on YMS, and I make every effort to hear their shows every week (Paul Cebar, Dewey) but their format means that there are many hours of the day when I simply do not listen because they are playing music I just don't care for. And when I need local/national news, there is nothing better than WUWM. Radio Milwaukee is filling another niche in my musical listening repertoire. Like other posters, I listened a lot when it first came on, to see what it was all about. They were playing a lot of things I had never heard before, and I liked it. I have now settled into a routine that finds me listening to Marcus Doucette (9 am - 2 pm) nearly every day. I think he is the best DJ on Milwaukee radio. I like the diversity of the music, as others have mentioned, but particularly the world beat stuff he plays (Manu Chao, Amadou et Mariam). Also, he has introduced me to some really cool hip-hop/jazz combo stuff that I had to run right over to Amazon to buy (Guru, Tao of Groove).

Buddy Lee and Go Hoosiers: you guys are dead on (format consistency, etc.) I do enjoy the mix-up: reggae to 70's soul, to new Indie. Here is what I like: honesty. I was listening during the day on Monday when they played a Wilco song. The mid-day DJ (sorry can't remember his name) called them "sort of alt-country something", "but, that's about all I know. I dig them. I know a lot of you out there know more about them than me. Hope you enjoyed it. It's all good." Well thanks for admitting that you aren't a huge Wilco fan but, you are open to liking different stuff rather than playing one of 30 songs your program manager or corporate owner says to play. For those who want them to talk about local issues: listen to NPR or TMJ then. I am glad to have an option for a change where the music has enough variety to stand on its own (no I don't like everything, particularly the mid, late, 90's R&B) but, I least I know there is something coming up that I may not have heard of before. At least I know I will NEVER (hopefully) hear bad jokes with inane laughter nor Boston, Kansas, Lynard, et al over and over and over again. And stop with the MSE comparisons: it's like making the argument about "well, I liked REM up to '83 before they sold out man." MSE is a legend here but, it isn't accessible (musically) for everyone. They aren't perfect but who is? Keep up the good work 88.9. Now if Mel Karziman's kid who owns the ESPN affiliate here could bring back a REAL jazz station, we would be set. I do miss the jazz...

I was excited to check this station out, and I did. It's ok. It's better than ANY commercial radio station. For me, nothing will ever beat WMSE for musical content, knowledgeable dj's and community support.

The Better Answer: if you do not like what Radio Milwaukee is broadcasting - - you can change it. They want you to change it. The folks answering here seem to strike me as individuals that have already forwarded their remarks via the WYMS website. Keep commenting. This will not work if you don't have a certain commitment to it. I happen to really enjoy the format. I will say that I recognize a playlist or at very least a pattern from time to time. I don't "love" every song. I assume some of the songs that I am enjoying are being pissed about by another. That's how it works. Plus, there aren't a lot of other options. Consider Chicago Radio. We may NEVER have those options, but this is something truly different. It seemes to be popular to address the music, but there is a community discussion being initiated. That's interesting, that's an attempt at Radio being Radio. I'm hooked.

I gave it my best shot for about a month but I listened to it because of the jazz format. For the kind of music they play now I can get my fill with MSE radio whose DJs are more dynamic.
