"Lite" beer: Great taste or less taste? |

In the late '60s, Miller Brewing Co. introduced low-calorie Miller Lite. Last summer, the company released Miller Chill, a light lager beer brewed with lime and salt. Now, the second largest brewery in the country is test marketing three craft, light beers: a blonde ale, amber and wheat.
The new beers have 110 calories and intended to combine low-calorie beer with craft-style taste. Although Milwaukee was not chosen as one of the test markets, the beer is expected to hit local liquor stores this summer.
What are you early thoughts on this beer? Do you have high or low expectations for these new craft beers from Miller?
Sounds delicious. This is a great idea and I cannot wait to sample them. There are not enough choices for light beer drinkers and these sounds very tasty. It simply makes sense to combine craft beers with light beers, and in the end, it's good for everyone, including small craft breweries because these products might introduce mainstream drinkers to different tastes.
This sounds like over-marketed swill. "Light" beers taste terrible and are meant for drinkers who don't really like beer. If all you're concerned about is calories, then don't drink beer. These new beers will at best taste like watered-down version of the real thing. No thanks, Miller.

I've had the blonde and the wheat and quite frankly they tasted like the same beer to me. I'm confused by Miller's goal here. Most discriminating beer drinkers who are looking for a good blonde/wheat/amber aren't going to buy a Miller Lite version. Those beer snobs tend to have a disdain for the large brewers, converting them to a Lite Blonde will be difficult at best. So that leaves current Lite drinkers as a target consumer right? Well, there you're only cannibalizing sales of the flagship product. Or worse, you get a Lite drinker to enjoy drinking amber beers and that drinker leaves Miller completely for a better tasting amber beer.

I love all beer but to watch ones weight lite beer is a must. It is by far the most effective way to cut calories and fat while drinking(other than riverting to the dreadful combination of bacardi and diet). As someone who lost a temendeous amount of weight while lite beer being my alcholic beverage of choice, Miller's plan is terrific, If these beers can hold up non lite beers they are imitating in any way then it will be a mild success.

I had them in Minneapolis last weekend and the Amber is so-so, but the Blonde is good.

All the marketing without the taste. Real beer lovers will still be drinking their beer from Sprecher or Lakefront breweries if they want to support local companies.
