A new Newsweek.com feature "10 Summer Music Festivals to Watch (or Listen) For," highlights its picks for the Top 10 Music Festivals in the country. Summerfest makes the list.
The story differentiates "The Destination Festivals" from "The City Festivals," with Summerfest topping the list in the City Festivals category.
Here's Newsweek's blurb on the Big Gig:
Dates: June 25–July 5
Location: Milwaukee
Cost:
$8–$15 festival admission daily; concerts on small stages are included
with admission; concerts on main stage at Marcus Amphitheater require
additional admission (tickets can be purchased separately through
Ticketmaster and range from around $8.50–$85)
Headliners:Bon Jovi, Conor Oberst, No Doubt, George Strait, Asher Roth, the Fray, Judas Priest
Crowd vibe: Teens, weekenders, big-haired Bon Jovi fans, a few cowboy hats and Gavin, Kingston and Zuma Rossdale, perhaps?
Hippie-meter: 3 out of 10
Rule: No kites
Differentiators: A live Summerfest Webcam that allows you to live vicariously through other attendees, if you're sick or can't afford to make it

i think curlyboy has it right. some pretty good acts come to milwaukee year round now. the onus shouldn't be on Summerfest to book the next Vampire Weekend or whatever the hell is considered up and coming these days. it's just a big, stupid, fun fest that really does bring in some pretty diverse acts at a nominal cost. btw-anyone wanting to slug me- A: i'll be at Rancid AT Summerfest B: the line forms to the left.

It might be a joke when compared to some of the other music fests on that list, but none of them are as diverse lineup wise. Plus anyone who grew up around here knows not to take SF music lineup seriously..it's all about beer drinking, people watching, and the occasional good band.

"Summerfest is a joke to true music lovers." i disagree. last year's Alejandro Escovedo/Drive By Truckers show was fantastic and every year there are at least two or three shows that "music lovers" appreciate (Wilco, Old 97's, Son Volt, etc.). those acts all play at the Pabst and/or Riverside as well, so i'm not really sure how you can praise one venue for booking those acts while downgrading another. at the same time, i can see your point about washed up 80's acts, though i think that stuff is kinda fun once a year (Joan Jett, Hall & Oates, etc.)

Besides the occasional good act at Marcus (Petty), Summerfest is a joke to true music lovers. Unfortuneatly, I think the fact that Summerfest can keep booking washed up bands from the 1980's and turning a profit speaks poorly of the music scene in Milwaukee. Besides maybe one night a year, I'll stick to the Pabst and Riverside who take pride in booking good acts.

Summerfest has far and away the best venue of any of the major festivals. Unfortunately, the music lineup has been very bland and mainstream for the past 3-4 years. Part of this may have to do with the timeframe in which Summerfest is held as it seems all of the top acts are tending to go over to Europe during this time.
