Have your doctorate in nursing? If you do, you didn't get it at any Wisconsin college or university.
Marquette University announced today the launch of the state's first program for graduate nursing students working towards a doctorate degree. This first of its kind program begins in fall 2008.
The program will require 57 graduate credits for the health care systems leadership option and 66 graduate credits for the advanced practice options in nurse midwifery, pediatrics, adults, older adults or acute care. It places emphasis on development of nursing practice expertise at the highest level, including translational research, epidemiology, informatics, health policy, statistics and professional issues.
The doctorate in nursing practice will eventually replace the College of Nursing's master's level advanced practice programs. Guidelines set by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing call for all programs designed to prepare nurses for advanced practice and nursing administration to be doctorates of nursing practice by 2015.

This seems redundant- between UWM's PhD in Nursing program, and MCW's Master of Public Health program, there does not seem to be anything new about this.

Oh please, credential wise, they are the same. Don't be silly.

PhD and DON (Doctorate of Nursing) are two entirely different things.. just ask a nurse.

The reader is right- UWM has a PhD program, but I'm not sure if there are any local universities that offer a DNP program. A DNP is on the same level as a PhD, but is more practice-based, as opposed to academic. In any event, the elimination of Master's in Nursing programs is short-sighted and foolish, in light of the nursing shortage. I foresee more barriers for nurses pursuing an advanced degree when faced only with the option of a PhD or DNP. Also, many hospital systems currently under-utilize Master's prepared nurses as it is, what incentive will they have to employ legions of highly educated nurses who will deservedly command a higher salary than that of Master's prepared nurses?

UW Milwaukee has had a PhD for nursing program for years. I think your article is incorrect.
