What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published Jan. 21, 2007 at 11:28 a.m.

When shaving, men often have trouble deciding which product to use. Each skin type presents its own difficulty when shaving.

Sensitive skin is prone to ingrown hairs and acne prone skin is difficult to shave with a straight razor. A clear shave gel is recommended for acne prone skin so you can see what you are doing. Sharps Kid Glove Shave gel is a perfect option for this.

  • In order to avoid cutting the skin, use small strokes while shaving. This creates less skin irritation and allows for a closer shave. However, cuts are often inevitable. Don't worry if you cut yourself, just get a styptic right away and then change the blade.
  • Keep the face moist with water because this helps the razor glide over the face and creates softer skin with less razor burn. Dip the razor in water periodically to keep it wet. It is always very important to prep the face with oil and refresh the blade often. Dermalogica Professional Shave or American Crew shave oil would be a great product choice in this situation.

Stumped about what shaving products to use? Here are Groom's recommendations based on your skin type:

  • Sensitive skin: American Crew herbal shave cream or Sharps shave gel
  • Acne-prone skin: Dermalogica shave oil or Sharps shave gel
  • Normal skin: American Crew classic shave cream

What to expect if you opt for a professional shave:

  • A steamed towel to open the pores, soften the facial hair and promote relaxation.
  • A facial massage and application of shave oil.
  • Application of shave cream or gel (depending on skin type) mixed with hot lather, followed by a full shave going with the grain of the hair.
  • After repeating steps 1 through 3, your barbette will shave against the grain of the hair which is followed by a cold towel to close the pores.
  • Application of a cleansing oil or gel and also an appropriate toner and moisturizer to compliment the skin type.
  • A finish with talcum powder.

Professional shaves are relaxing and healthy for the skin, and they are a perfect treat for special occasions. We also evaluate your skin and recommend the proper products so that you can achieve a better shave on your own.
