Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett announced today the appointment of Ann Beier as Environmental Sustainability Director, a new cabinet-level position that manages a green economy through smart approaches to water and energy issues.

Barrett says Beier will be responsible for creating and implementing a Green City Plan based on the Mayor's Milwaukee Green Team list of recommendations for both the public and private sector.

"I believe we should harness the innovation and environmental technologies of our local companies to reduce energy costs, keep Lake Michigan healthy and to create green collar jobs," said Mayor Barrett. "I created the Office on Environmental Sustainability to put practical, environmental solutions to work for all of us."

Beier is a Wisconsin native with more than 20 years of experience working on environmental issues on all levels of government.
