Fifteen people competed in Tuesday night's "OMC-B," the city's first adult spelling bee held in a bar, but only two walked away as winners.
Monica Bennett took First Place, after a nail-biter of a final spell-off against Nathan Schaefer. Bennett received a $125 gift certificate to The Social and an iPod Shuffle; Schaefer took home a $50 gift certificate to Sol Fire restaurant and a coupon for a free cooking class at Room 434, where the bee was held.
Schaefer was eliminated after misspelling "isosceles," meaning "two sides that are equal." Bennett spelled the word correctly, and went on to win the bee after successfully spelling "denouement," meaning "the final outcome/result of a play."
Other words used in the spelling bee include renaissance, schizophrenic, subpoena, mnenomic, yarmulke, onomatopoeia and more. Milwaukee words "Quadracci" and "Bjonda" were also on the list.
Room 434 was packed for the event, and the crowd was very engaged. Owner Kevin Sloan and the OMC staff are considering another bee in the future.
"The bee was very fun. That’s as simple as I can put it," says Sloan.

C. said: I thought the event and the event space were great. Fun was had by all. Seriously if you hated it so much, why did stay? Cause it was fun, unique and a great thing that Onmilw did. Thanks.

Karsten said: Man, some people here are way p.o.'d that this event was overcrowded. And you know what? They should be. It takes a lot to get Milwaukeeans out of their houses on a cold Tuesday night in winter. So don't lure them out with drink specials that the staff don't know anything about and a show that they can't see or hear. Bonus, I know exactly who the SWA (server with attitude) was that everyone keeps mentioning. My brief encounter with SWA was enough to keep me outta 434 for awhile: I asked for a drink menu, SWA slams it on bar. SWA walks away never to return. In gratitude, I ordered nothing. The people around me said "Someone needs a time out!"

Nicole Horvath said: I'm in total agreement with Amy M. Especially the pronouncer comments; not only was she mispronouncing words, but in fact, my word: Kielbasa, I misspelled and she didn't catch it. I think it was a great idea, kudos to Onmilwaukee.com and to Molly; and I saw the wad of cash handed to Barbara Felix from Literacy Services of Wisconsin, looked to me as if a lot of money was raised. I was under the impression that part of the proceeds from the restaurant were going to the organization...anyone know for sure? On a separate note, the service was not very good. I tried ordering the mac n cheese but they were out. Huh? I was the first person in that bar for dinner. So I ordered the grilled cheese--absolutely awful. I should have sent it back but I was preoccupied with The Bee and didn't bother. I think there should definitely be more bees but at a different venue(s). Thanks again for your hard efforts at putting this together!

Amy M. said: As a contestant, I can attest to both the good and the not-so-good elements of the evening. The bee was a novel event; kudos to OnMilwaukee.com for sponsoring it. A larger venue would have helped. Also, more money going to Literacy Services would have been nice -- perhaps a $2-$3 cover charge or a percentage of the bar tab? I also think that keeping all of the Milwaukee-centric words in the same round, so all contestants got one, would have been a good idea. (By the way, Bjonda is in Wauwatosa, not Milwaukee.) My only other criticism is that the master pronouncer could not pronounce all of the words. That was slightly problematic. Again, all in all it was a fun night and I'd do it again. Thanks for thinking of us spelling geeks.

Jenny Jamone said: i was surprised to see 434 trying to serve food during this event. they really should have closed the kitchen. most orders sat on the bar for a very long time while people congregated around other people's food. id be surprised if those meals didn't taste like ashtrays! i met the owner (Kevin) over someone else's dinner plate, and even he didn't seem too concerned about it.
