Milwaukeeans can always count on Mike Eitel, the man behind Brady Street's The Nomad, to dish up something a little different. When we heard Eitel was the man behind the renovations to the former Sequel's, 1758 N. Water St. -- which appear to be progressing feverishly -- we were excited.
Although Eitel is reportedly in Paris and therefore unable to comment, we asked around and got some inside dish on Trocadero, which is tentatively slated to open Wed., Sept. 12 (pushed back from Sept. 7). Editor's note: Trocadero opened Thurs., Sept. 27, 2001.
Trocadero is unusual in that it is a cafe and a newsstand...and a tobacco shop...and a deli...and a tavern. Trocadero will also have outdoor seating on the north side of the building. Inside, murals by Nomad bartender Amy O'Neill (who painted the Michelangelo-esque works in Schwartz Bookshops' Downer shop) will cover the walls and the newsstand, which will focus on international magazines and newspapers, and will boast an old-fashioned Parisian art nouveau look.
Plans to host live music events are also reportedly on the drawing board. Meanwhile, Eitel and his staff are prepping the place for the opening and for a grand opening party, slated for Thurs., Sept. 27.
Trocadero will open every morning at 7 a.m. and the bar will open at 3 p.m. It will be closed on Sundays. With a ready-made east side crowd nearby and a host of new housing springing up on its doorstep, the unique and user-friendly Trocadero seems a good pick to click.
