What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published March 29, 2009 at 12:19 p.m.

Being 100 percent smoke-free certainly has not stunted Sugar Maple's growth. Although still a member of the minority in the Milwaukee bar scene, the Bay View beertopia can breathe easy as it reaches an important milestone in April: its first birthday.

Although the space, which used to be the Sikh Temple, was initially criticized for being a bit too sparse for a neighborhood hangout, it has really grown into its skin and made the bar a laid-back, comfortable place to gather and geek out over hops. The recently added couch section really does wonders.

Co-owner Adrienne Pierluissi has been busy implementing a number of cool community events, including rummage sales book swaps, kids events and a monthly all-women beer tasting.

She's also satisfying our hunger. Starting in April Sugar Maple is serving up homemade soups daily -- one vegetarian and one carnivorous -- with a hunk of fresh bread on the side. The soups are made by Triskele's restaurant.

So if you're up for a little partying, be there to celebrate the close of year one with Sugar Maple on Wednesday, April 1. You'll get $2 off all taps.

So ease of enforcement is the criteria? Look, people in general are moving away from smoking and certain bar owners are realizing this and succeeding in a non-smoking format. If the market is changing to account for the ever growing group of people who want to frequent bars without smoke, why do we need laws to enforce it? The thing that I don't understand is why people are so anti-smoking in bars when the main product served in bars also causes huge health problems. If you spend enough time in bars that the smoke hurts your health, my guess is your lifestyle isn't healthy in general (and I know you'll mention bartenders but there's nothing to say they have to work at a bar).

I think a smoking ban would be relatively easy to enforce, while drunk driving laws are much more difficult to enforce.

Yes, and thanks to those drunk driving laws, there is no more drunk driving!

You win, though I do believe there are drunk driving laws. However it is still legal to make every bar/restaurant a pack of smokes for employees and guests. Thank God for that. God bless your freedom to do that.

Maimed not mained. Not to mention, are others' freedoms infringed upon by all the other problems of alcohol use/abuse? Do I need to start listing them?
