Cafe Hollander Wauwatosa
7677 W. State St.
(414) 475-6771
When Diablos Rojos opened its second Cafe Hollander in July, this time in the heart of Tosa Village, Wauwatosans and West Siders rejoiced at finally getting a sleek, comfortable, easy-going place that has an amazing array of beers.
Add some soccer on the boob tube, outdoor dining (in season, of course) and people watching and this westernmost D.R. outpost is a sure-fire hit.
Menu: When it comes to food there are full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus and a Sunday brunch, too. But Hollander really excels when it comes to beer. There are 20 choices on tap -- everything from Tripel Karmeliet to Kwak, Petrus and Stella Artois to Fat Tire, Guinness and Kronenbourg 1664. There's a menu of rarities, oddities and limited editions, and dozens more in bottles.
Price: Moderate. Some of Belgian beers run toward pricey.
When to go: Any time is the right time. Lunch or dinner outside is unbeatable on a nice day, but Hollander is great just for drinks at the bar, too.
Dress: Casual, but especially on weekend evenings, you could kick it up a notch. But no one will look at you askance if you don't.
Don't miss: The tasting palette Belgian beer sampler, which lets you sample any four tap beers for $12.
Parking: In addition to on-street parking nearby, there is an indoor municipal lot just northwest of Hollander and an open, surface lot, just to the south across the bridge over the river.

I've been to both Hollander and LeReve, and while I agree that Hollander's service seems to always be sub-par, I've noticed LeReve's service go down in the past couple months as well. It's unfortunate as both places could be great destination spots in Tosa, they really need some polishing.

This article is in the bars section and says its part of bar month. So, my guess is that this is more about drinking than eating. What's the drinks selection like at Le Reve? Ha ha ha.

We went there one friday night and ordered the hamburger and the portabella sandwich and were disappointed with both. The hamburger was only average while the portabella was just wrong. The portabella sandwich was made with sad little strips of mushroom instead of a quality portabella that you would see at most restaurants. The fries were good but I can't justify going back to the restaurant only for the fries.

Cafe Hollander is definitely carving out a niche for itself in Tosa. For anyone familiar with Cafe Centraal, it's basically the same, but a lot closer to home for us Tosa residents. And yes, Sugar Maple has a better beer list at slightly cheaper prices. But Sugar Maple also happens to be in Bay View. This is about as good as it gets in Tosa right now. As for the service... I've been there about a half dozen times and I've always had very good, if not outright excellent, service. The bartenders and waitstaff have always been very generous about providing beer samples, and the food is very good. Other than the prices (which really aren't that bad), I'd say the only real drawback to the place is the fact that it can get pretty crowded on weekends.
