Here at OnMilwaukee.com, we've been accused of ignoring our suburban neighbors. In our defense, we've never claimed to be OnWaukesha.com or OnRacine.com. However, the North Shore of Milwaukee is still Milwaukee (and Mequon, we suppose), and it's worthy of a little coverage. Though not the thriving bar scene you'll find on the East Side, our friends in Bayside, Glendale and Thiensville sport some cool places to tip a few, too.
Centennial Bar & Grille
10352 N. Port Washington Rd., Mequon
(262) 241-4353
This sports bar isn't the world's liveliest pub, but with a good menu and Friday fish fry, it deserves to on the list. The building is, of course, about 100 years old, and makes for an interesting place grab a cold one.
Harry's Bar & Grill
3549 N. Oakland Ave., Shorewood
(414) 964-6800
A nice blend of a Brew City sports bar with an upscale dining experience. Harry's has a reputation for good food, but they also have a talented and experienced bar staff who can make just about anything.
Howard's Pub and Grille
5208 W. County Line Rd., Mequon
(262) 238-9881
Howard's must be the most rockin' bar in Mequon. Right on the border with Brown Deer, the bar is known as a hang out for Brown Deer High School alumni, and it's good selection of tap beer helps pack them in. The crowd is surprisingly diverse, as is their well-stocked jukebox.
Silver Spring House
6655 N. Green Bay Ave., Glendale
(414) 352-3920
This old roadhouse serves good food and cold beer. An old-fashioned pub feel welcomes you -- the festive atmosphere and friendly services keeps you wanting more. A favorite for North Shore types.
Speakeasy
600 W. Brown Deer Rd., Bayside
(414) 352-9815
Speakeasy -- cute name, huh? Well, this is one bar that deserves it, since when it started, it was a real speakeasy. If you want to get a drink on the North Shore, check it out. It's got comfortable atmosphere (some have said it reminds them of a living room), renowned burgers and good inexpensive drinks. If that's not enough, check out their gigantic tropical fish tank on the lower level.
Village Pub
4488 N. Oakland Ave., Shorewood
(414) 961-9879
Just on the border between East Side and North Shore, Shorewood's Village Pub is the kind of place that if you blink, you'd swear you were Up North. The lodge-like atmosphere is full of regulars from the neighborhood who enjoy its low-key Northwoods appeal. Like every other towny bar in Wisconsin, the Village Pub also has frozen pizza, beef jerky and the usual assortment of bar food.
