There's something refreshingly delicious about a cocktail with muddled mint. While the mojito mixes cane sugar with rum, the Mint Julep improvises with powdered sugar and whiskey.
Ingredients:
2 1/2 parts Makers Mark Bourbon
1 tsp. powdered sugar
2 tsp. water
3 fresh mint springs
Muddle mint leaves, powdered sugar and water in a highball glass. Fill the glass with shaved or crushed ice and add bourbon. Top with more ice and garnish with a mint sprig. Serve with a straw.

...and "the experts" will also suggest that it must be enjoyed in the proper julep cup, which is not stainless steel, but sterling silver. But at about $150 a pop, I haven't made that investment for the one day out of the year that I actually drink these.

For a proper julep, you really need to create a simple sugar and cool with mint sprigs over night. (But kudos on the choice of Maker's!)

This makes me eager for Derby day! Alternatively, instead of powdered sugar, make a simple syrup (boil one part water and one part granulated sugar). For extra "umpf," infuse the syrup with a few mint leaves. Churchill Downs uses Jim Beam. Maker's is a better option. Woodford Reserve is a personal fave. And, if you can hunt down a stainless steel cup to drink it out of...pure heaven.
