After an amicable split of its principal partners, the newly reformed Diablos Rojos Restaurant Group announced the upcoming addition of Merryweather's Super Bar & Eatery, 2306 S. Kinnickinic Ave., to a lineup that includes Trocadero and Café Hollander.

The group has already begun demolition of a former dental clinic at the corner of Lincoln and Kinnickinnic Avenues in Bay View.

Company president Kristyn St. Denis says they hope to open in early fall and explains "we are really pleased with the location and excited for the future of the business district."

The two remaining principals, Eric Wagner and Mike Eitel say they have been looking westward for their next location but the combination of a thriving, dynamic neighborhood and a corner building full of character was too much to pass up.

"It definitely fits our model," says Wagner. "We absolutely love the idea of breathing new life into such a great building."

"We have great support from the neighborhood, including valuable input and ideas from Alderman Zielinski," added Wagner.

Eitel said it is a bit too early to discuss the details, but that the operation will be similar to their other restaurants. Like Trocadero and Hollander, Eitel says there is a major outdoor component. "We hope to apply green technologies to an exterior courtyard that should extend the outdoor dining season by at least a couple of months."

"We want Merryweather's to compliment the surrounding businesses and fill the needs of the neighborhood," he added.

"We plan to do lunch, dinner, late night food as well as Saturday and Sunday brunches," Eitel said. "The bar area will be a main draw as well. We plan to provide a large, comfortable bar as a meeting place for the neighborhood."

Wagner believes the intersection has the potential to be a destination for late night revelers as well. "With the upcoming additions of Sugar Maple and Merryweather's, Bay View suddenly has a new entertainment district that can draw from the surrounding neighborhoods."

Merryweather's will bolster a group that recently downsized with the loss of Hi Hat, Garage and Balzac.

"This is the first of many new projects on the horizon," Wagner said. "We are definitely prepared to add new restaurants to the group as opportunities present themselves. We are definitely in 'go' mode."
