As OnMilwaukee.com gets ready to host its third annual Bartender Olympics, you can prepare to cheer on the competition by familiarizing yourself with future Milwaukee Bar Olympians.
We've been profiling the participating bartenders over the last two weeks in preparation for the big night at Whiskey Bar on Thursday, Feb. 24.
Cheer on your favorite bartender while they compete in four events, including the Pabst can stack and the cocktail contest. Plus, there's a talent competition this year! Special guests include 102.1's Kramp and Adler and Jen Lada from Fox 6 News. Drink specials, a Shutterbox photo booth and Street-za pizza will also be available.
Here's a quick Q & A with bartender and 2010 Bartender Olympics Champion Matty Gonzales from Sabbatic.
OnMilwaukee.com: How long have you been tending bar?
Matty Gonzales: 16 years.
OMC: What's your favorite Milwaukee bar (other than the one where you work)?
MG: Haven't changed from last year (Angelo's, Barnacle Bud's, Jamo's and Champion's Pub.
OMC: What's the most important tool behind the bar?
MG: I'm not answering that.
OMC: What's the best way to clean up vomit?
MG: Who cares? Ain't me.
OMC: What's the best way to handle someone who's been overserved?
MG: Uppercut? Right cross? There are so many ways!
OMC: Have you served anyone famous? If so, did they tip well?
MG: Didn't serve Keanu Reeves. Made him leave my bar to shoot pool with me so I could make fun of him for hours somewhere I didn't work.
OMC: What drink are you making for Bartender Olympics?
Cream Your Hangover
1.5 ounce Absolut
1 part Sprecher cream soda
1 part Sprecher Orange Dream
Shake over ice and serve neat
Matty is one of those bartenders that is so good at the mechanics of bartending that you don't even realize he's already made your drink during the conversation you've just had w/ him. He's really that good & would be good anywhere b/c people would go visit him no matter where he's working. Any bar he's behind, man - he completely owns & dominates. Very engaging.
