Fans of "American Idol" use it to practice singing in front of an audience before getting skewered by Simon. Drinking buddies see it as a great dare for the drunkest in the group. And some aim to "wow" the record company executives who surely hang at local bars and restaurants looking for their next big star.
The old saying goes that "karaoke" is Japanese for "tone-deaf." Actually, it comes from the Japanese "kara," as in "void," and "oke," which means "sutora," a Japanese derivative of "orchestra." And its ascendancy since the '90s hasn't let up; bars all over Milwaukee still regularly hold karaoke nights. So, if you're prepping your pipes and looking for legitimacy, here's a list of places where you can sing your little heart out.
Be sure to call the establishment before you prepare any Sunny and Cher or Aretha Franklin. Not all places consistently hold karaoke nights.

Robert's on 4301 S. howel has karaoke every other Sat. night 8:30 till 12:30 Very good sound and lots of songs. Come down and give it a try I think you will like it.

Cataldo's on KK (The Bay View Post) is a great place with a great selection. One rule...no swearing or the mic will be turned off. Also the days and times are psoted incorrectly. It is Wed 9P-1:30A, Fri & Sat 10P - 2:15A. Great food also. Check it!

The Rafters @ 7228 S. 27th Street Oak Creek has karaoke every Friday starting October 2nd. The show starts at 8:00p.m. Hope to see you there!

My favorite place for karaoke is Wild Bill's in West Allis. Just south of Greenfield on 92nd. Right across from St Al's. I first started singing when a girlfriend sang and wanted me to sing. At first like everybody I felt like a fool. Now I get cheered and asked for there favorite songs. Please join us...Sunday nites at 7 P.M. to Midnite. Give this place a try....you will be suprised at the talent here. Rick
