Now that state lawmakers have reached a deal to prohibit smoking in virtually all workplaces -- including restaurants and taverns -- this Best of Bars category will soon become moot.
But since Wisconsin's state-wide smoking band doesn't go into effect until this July, Milwaukeeans can still debate and discuss their favorites among the select few bars in this city that have opted to go smoke-free without government intervention.
Although more than a handful have axed the ashtrays before it, Whiskey Bar, a relative newcomer to Jefferson Street, won over Milwaukeeans' lungs with its clean air environment.
Whiskey Bar opened in July 2009 (and hosted OnMilwaukee.com's Mad Men-themed party in October). Owner Mike Vitucci says his high-end decor -- he uses warm, diffused lighting and wide leather chairs, sectionals and sofas to create an intimate setting good for lounging and conversation -- played a part in his decision to be smoke-free from day one.
"When you see the leather furniture and the light shades, you're not going to want to trash that (with smoke)," he says.
For smokers, there is an adjacent outdoor patio space facing Jackson Street that seats 60.

Kudos to OnMilwaukee.com Editors for their Number One choice, City Lounge. Our also. I now take back half the things I said about yah ! :)
Yes! Too much government! Down with city health inspectors! Down with bans on prostitution and required licensing for strip clubs! Let bars stay open as long as they please! Let them serve 4-year old children if they think its good business! Stop holding bars liable for overserving clearly drunk patrons who kill entire families on their drive home! If I want to water down my beer lines, to pour cheap vodka in Grey Goose bottles, or insulate my walls and ceiling with asbestos, I should have the right to do so!This is America! Down with these Communist Fascist Socialists!
You mean taverns can decide to go smoke free on their own, and be successful, without the naggery of an unnecessary smoking ban?
Wait, a businessowner exercising his own right to choose how to run his business with regard to a legal product???? NO WAY!
Wow!! I didn't even realize MKE had this many smoke free bars. Kudos to these bar owner for choosing to exercise their rights to do what they feel is better for their business. It really is too bad that all bar owners will no longer have that same right come July 1st.
