Milwaukee's best club, 2010: The Mad Planet

"Bar Month" at OnMilwaukee.com is back for another round! The whole month of February, we're serving up intoxicatingly fun articles on bars and clubs -- including guides, the latest trends, rapid bar reviews and more. Grab a designated driver and dive in!

The votes are in and the winners have been selected for OnMilwaukee's Best: Bars & Clubs, 2010. Find readers' results in 50 categories, including an editors' pick, in this series of articles that run daily in the Bars and Clubs section of OnMilwaukee.com.

It's hard to mess with tradition. It seems the loyal readers of OnMilwaukee.com are equally as loyal to their favorite nightlife hotspot, because The Mad Planet has once again taken the gold for Milwaukee's best club.

And who are we to disagree?

The Riverwest club -- owned by Rosemary Silagy -- opened almost 20 years ago. With its eclectic crowd and funky motif, The Planet is a people watchers' wonderland. Punks, goths, hipsters, bachelorette parties and everyone in between mix it up on a regular basis inside the spacious bar -- or outdoors on the tree-canopied patio.

Yes, every Friday night is still '80s Night at The Mad Planet, and yes, it's still packed until closing time with folks looking to shake it to some retro tunes. After all these years, The Smiths still don't get old.

But when it comes to booking live bands, the venue takes a much more up-to-date approach. Local, independent acts play here regularly, as do bigger national bands.

Suite's not a bad place, but get serious. But it is one of those highly trendy clubs that will loose it's appeal in about 5 years, when it's next makeover will be required. Mad Planet has staying power, and never really seems to go out of style.

Good to see Moct and Wherehouse up there. Suite is disgusting. Slap some paint on Have a nice Day Cafe and change the name to Suite. Charge ridiculous prices. No thanks.

Mad Planet + $2 PBR = illest dance club in MKE. Suite? really.... you can't take a p*ss at Suite for $2.

okay you downtown snobs have obviously never been to Mad Planet. it probably won because the crowd is down to earth, the music is good, and the drinks are very cheap. perhaps, the category you're looking for is "Most Pretentious Bar With Overpriced Drinks"

I can not agree more with Downtown. This is a biggest screw up in the history of OnMilwaukee.com Mad Planet has been nothing for well over 6 years, and Suite, the busiest and by far best new club to open in the last 18 months is not even on the list. At some point OnMilwaukee should just stop doing their "best of" lists if they are not even close to being real. This is just getting silly.
