What is a blog? For us it is a short blurb that we write when the mood strikes us. It can be first person, funny or informative. In short, a blog is whatever we want it to be. Published Nov. 22, 2008 at 10:21 p.m.

There were some empty seats in the corners of the upper level -- it's not clear whether we should blame deer hunting or the economy for those - but the crowd of 15,168 got to see a pretty entertaining display as Marquette defeated UW-Milwaukee, 100-80, Saturday night at the Bradley Center.

Wesley Matthews and Lazar Hayward each scored 25 points and Jerel McNeal scored 22 for the Golden Eagles (3-0), who blew open a close game with a 10-0 run early in the second half.

Marquette became the 50th team in the NCAA to record its 1,400th victory.

After a solid first half, the Panthers (3-2), who got 23 points from Tone Boyle, fell victim to shaky shot selection and foul trouble in the second.

"We hit a stretch there where we got disjointed," Panthers coach Rob Jeter said. "We shot 50 percent in the first half, and I thought we were together. The second half, we started to play a little too much as individuals.

"Fundamentally, we had some errors. As soon as we can master some of those basics of sharing the ball a little more and passing up a good shot for a great shot, we can be a little more dangerous as a team."

Jeter coached the game a little more than 48 hours after the death of his father, Bob, a Pro Bowl defensive back for the Green Bay Packers during the 1960s and is a member of the Packers Hall of Fame.

"I appreciate all of the text messages and e-mails that I've received," Jeter said. "I know that my father touched a lot of people and did things the right way."

The Golden Eagles honored Bob Jeter's memory with a moment of silence before the game

"You've got to stay focused," Jeter said. "It is part of life. It sounds harsh to say. We live and when it's time for you to go, it's that time. It's what you do on those moments in between (that counts). I feel real proud to be a son and proud of my father for how he lived those moments in between."

Also- for the interested general public, awesome seats can be had for $10. Best sports deal in Milwaukee. We play Ball State (tonight), Bradley, Butler, Wright State, Cleveland State, Valporaiso, UIC, Loyola, Green Bay, and a to-be-named ESPN Brackbuster matchup in February.. UWM Students- get your butt out to the home games- ALL UWM HOME GAMES ARE FREE WITH A VALID UWM STUDENT ID!!!!!!!!!! THIS TEAM IS GOOD- VERY GOOD. It will take time, but we'll get there.

I agree that attendence at Panther games has long been dissapointing. Remember however, that not too long ago (1992, which was UWM's full return to D-I) attendence at the Klotsche Center was a mere 100-200 fans. The program has come a long way, but yes, an avg. of about 3,000 per home game (where UWM has stood since '06-'07) won't cut it. As stated, even during the Pearl era, attendance topped out at an avg. of only about 4-5k. With the 28,000 students, and literally 100,000's of potential casual (or avid) college basketball fans in Milwaukee, the Panthers should be able to draw at least 6-7k per night. A lot of it has to do with winning, but (see Pearl era stat above) even with winning- it largely comes down to marketing. If people don't know about a game, you can't blame them for not showing up. Things have been getting better, but I'll admit I had no idea you could get in free to a UWM game as a student until my senior year!!! UWM needs to build up and maintain a much higher level of school pride and school spirit- right now, most kids don't care- many are simply biding their time at UWM until they are guarenteed transfer to Madison. A culture of winning basketball needs to be instilled. Ryan, then Pearl started this, and while Rob got off to a great start in his first season- there is a long, long ways to go. If the UWM AD starts taking attendance as serious as they take the rent at the US Cellular Arena (as it affects their budget) and if UWM makes the NCAA Tournament 3 more times in the next 5 years (with at least one first round win or further), I think we will easily see an average of 6,000/game at the Arena. People want to see a winner. Period. PS: I'll even put the 6,000 number at 7,500 if the Bucks were to leave town (seems more an more like an inevitability).

You can't blame MU alumni either...90% of them live in Chicago...or one of their 800 suburbs.

i share you're frustration trr. as a Panther season ticket holder i often lament the fact that we struggle to draw fans. even during the Pearl era we only averaged 5,000 or so (a great number for the Horizon Leage, btw). our student section can go anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand depending on the magnitude of the game. it all comes down to promotion and awareness. so rather than berate those who don't attend, why not invite them to come along to a game. milwaukee is missing out a what looks to be a promising young team. and in this economy you simply can't beat the price. you can have a fantastic seat for under $20 --- as opposed to the nosebleeders i had for $30-plus for the UMW/MU game. we play Ball State tuesday night for those interested.

...oh, and home game tickets for UWM students are free! And sometimes there are only like a dozen or so students there. SAD!
